Parkes Health Council
Why were the Health Councils established? To establish community input into health care in their own locality. To involve the community in the health care planning process. To make better use of the health care dollar by enlisting local knowledge. Who established the Health Councils & when? Dr Andrew Refshauge announced in March 1996 a restructure of rural health services. Part of the restructure required amalgamation of several health districts to form MWAH and the establishment and formation of Health Councils was a part of this process. The current NSW Government has confirmed its commitment to Health Councils. What is our role? To advocate for the community. To communicate the local health issues to the board. To assist in future planning and development. To help identify community needs and work with the health services to deliver those needs. To meet monthly taking to the committee any information appropriate to health care. To facilitate communications between MWAHS and the community. What is not our role? The Health Council Does not manage individual Health Services ie hospitals, MPS's or Community Health. Is not involved in the day to day running of the Health Services. Does not provide expert advice on health issues. Issues, along these lines are dealt with by the Health Service. Brochures such as Guarantee of Service, explain these procedures. Business Plan Objectives: To create and distribute an information brochure providing basic details about the Health Council. To publish each month the meeting minutes in the Champion Post and Bogan Times. To deliver the Parkes Health Council's presentation package to at least 4 major forums over the 12 month period. To provide access for the Parkes & surrounding communities to the Health Council via email & a postal address.
