Parks and Gardens Information

Council is responsible for the maintenance and development of parks and reserves (passive recreation) within Parkes Shire. Sporting grounds (active recreation) are generally managed by Sports Councils, with Council staff maintaining those ovals where the Sports Council does not have the necessary equipment. Altogether Council controls approximately 50 separate parks and ovals, with a total area of over 150 hectares. Additionally Parks and Gardens staff maintain a multitude of gardens throughout the Shire, including those of community facilities such as The Neighbourhood Centre, Family Day Care, Libraries, etc.
Property Ownership and Responsibilities Council controls Parkland within Parkes Shire. The land is either owned by Council, or is Crown land with Council as trustees. Finance Finance for parks and gardens is provided mostly by Council. Some income is generated from Section 94 Contributions from subdivisions. Budget Allocations The following amounts have been included in the Management Plan for Parks and Gardens: Revenue (Sect 94 Cont) $150,000 Expenses Maintenance and Working Expenses $440,000 Buildings M&R (other than toilets) $23,000 Purchase water $103,000 Capital Expenses Long Term Plan Improvements $367,768 Workforce Council has eleven staff employed in the Parks and Gardens section. Temporary staff are also engaged in high growth periods. The Parkes Sports Council employ three full time staff and one trainee to maintain the sporting ovals of Parkes. Plant Parks and Gardens staff utilise three utilities, two light tipping trucks, three out front mowers and two tractor/slasher combinations (tractor/slashers are also utilised for road shoulder mowing as required) to cover the whole Shire. Parkes Sports Council operate their own equipment.
