Labour Market Programs

Since 1993 Parkes Shire Council has sponsored and operated 19 Labour Market Programs and seven (7) Green Corps Programs. The programs have provided placements for 300 local unemployed people.

Participants have received on the job training in various Council work activities and off the job training in work related subjects. Council has been able to achieve significant program outcomes with 40% of participants gaining employment or commencing further education and training at the completion of the programs. A significant number of participants are now working full time with Parkes Shire Council.

The programs have enabled the community and Council to implement many quality projects, some of which may not have been implemented without the input of program participants. Project work has been implemented in Parkes and throughout the Shire including the villages of Trundle, Tullamore and Peak Hill. A six monthly Job Skills program was based at Peak Hill for local unemployed people of aboriginal descent.

Participation in the projects has provided participants with a sense of achievement and community input. The Green Corps programs have provided participants with training and practical experience in environmental management. The programs have enabled Council to contribute to environmental conservation by implementing future actions recommended by Councils environmental management plans.

Participants have implemented quality conservation projects including the fencing out and protection of rare roadside native tree and shrub species. The Green Corps crews have worked with several local Landcare Groups providing input to conservation projects over a broad community base.

Further information on Green Corps Programs can be obtained from Environmental Services
