Over $105,000 has been generated for local businesses through the Shop Parkes Gift Cards since the shop local program launched in December last year.

Of that, over $46,000 has already been spent in store at the 50 participating stores across Parkes, Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore.

The shop local program, launched by Parkes Shire Council in December 2018, aims to stimulate economic activity and support our local business community, by encouraging people to look local first.

Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM said "Our community is still grappling with the devastating impacts of drought. So, it is especially important that we help to keep the money flowing throughout our region where possible."

"Referred to as the multiplier effect - money spent at locally-owned businesses is more likely to be recirculated back into the local economy."

"To put it simply - when we support local businesses, they support us."

The shop local program has not only benefitted businesses, but a number of local residents in need of a helping hand. Charities and non-for-profit organisations have utilised the program to load and distribute grant funding to farmers across the region affected by the drought.

President of Parkes Rotary Club, Jenny Jewell said "The Rotary Club of Parkes is very proud to have been associated with the Shop Parkes Gift Cards since its inception."

"This card system has enabled our Club to send over 100 cards with a value of $500 loaded onto each, to farmers in need of a ‘pick-me-up’. A fantastic result for both the recipients and the local business who benefit from the cards being spent locally."

Shop Parkes Region Gift Cards are a convenient gifting solution that keep shopping dollars local in the Parkes region. There is no cost for the card, customers only pay for the amount they wish to load onto it. As little as $1 to as much as $1000 can be loaded onto a single gift card, which is valid for 3 years. They act like an Eftpos savings card, and can be spent in multiple transactions across a number of participating stores within the Parkes Shire.

Business operators within the Parkes Shire who are interested in participating in the program are encouraged to contact Council on 02 6861 2333.
