The recipient of this year's Jack Scoble Educational Scholarship will use the funds to embark on a course that she hopes will eventually benefit farmers across the Parkes Shire region.

Growing up on a sheep, cattle and grain property near Tullamore, Mikala McLean has always loved animals and the business of running a farm.

Graduating from Tullamore Central School in 2019, Mikala will leave the family farm in March to undertake a Bachelor of Animal Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, using the scholarship to support her studies and her accommodation.

"When I have completed my degree I hope to move back to regional and rural NSW to help farmers through easy and harder times with the changing environment," Mikala said.

"This scholarship will help me to finish university to the very best of my abilities."

The Jack Scoble Educational Scholarship provides support for Parkes Shire high school graduates, undertaking their first year of full-time university studies in 2020.

Fifteen applications from across the Shire were received for the 2020 Jack Scoble Educational Scholarship.

Parkes Shire Council's Manager Cultural Education & Library Services, Kerryn Jones said "Council's Cultural, Education & Library Committee received fifteen outstanding applications, and Mikala was chosen from the five shortlisted candidates."

"We were extremely impressed by the candidates in both the written and interview stages. The Committee took into consideration the applicant's preparedness for university studies, career plans, how the scholarship would support their plans, and financial hardship. This helped the Committee in the final selection process."

"Mikala is a very worthy recipient and we are delighted to help kick-start what is sure to be a promising career."

During its 12 year history, the Jack Scoble Education Scholarships have provided financial assistance to students to the value of $95,000 between 2006 and 2020.

The late Mr. Scoble MBE, OAM was Mayor of Parkes from 1966 to 1979. He died in 2003, providing a profound legacy of community involvement, civic pride, leadership and high personal values.
