Celebrate 60 years of ‘The Dish’!

60 Years of the Parkes radio telescope – Adult Competition

 

October 31, 2021, marks the 60th Anniversary of the opening of the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope. Affectionately known as ‘The Dish’, the Telescope has played an important role in our understand­ing of the universe, space exploration and significant events, such as the 1969 Moon landing. To celebrate 60 years of ‘The Dish’ the Parkes Shire Library and Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope team, is hosting a competition and exhibition in the Parkes Shire.

 

Using the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope as inspiration, entrants are invited to submit works in the following categories:

  1. ART- Including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery etc.
  2. WRITING- (1500 word maximum), poem, short story, written reflection or essay.
  3. DRAMATIC/PERFORMING ARTS- short film, dance, spoken word poetry, stop motion, monologue or scene
  4. MUSIC- Instrumental piece or song
  5. ‘DISH’ PAINTING- Painting of a 3D printed Model of a Radio Telescope. These models will be delivered via contactless delivery to entrants to paint.

Entrants may enter multiple categories, however, are limited to one entry per category.

The finished pieces will be displayed in the Parkes Shire Library and Cultural Centre.

 

When: Monday 20 September – Friday 15 October.

Who: Ages 16 and over.

Prizes:

First prize – A guided tour of the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope for you and your family* and a $50 Shop Parkes Gift Card.

Runner-up – $50 Shop Parkes Gift Card.

 

*Tours subject to health orders and CSIRO maintenance periods and staff availability.
