The Parkes community gathered today to officially open the recently refurbished and up and running Parkes Little Theatre, thanks to funding provided by the NSW Nationals and Liberals Government and Parkes Shire Council.

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless and Nationals Candidate for Orange, Kate Hazelton, joined Parkes Shire Deputy Mayor Cr Barbara Newton, fellow Councillors and members of the Parkes Musical and Dramatic Society (M&D) to mark the opening and see the upgraded and modern theatre shine in all its glory.

“This theatre is an artistic centrepiece situated in the heart of Parkes which has brought people in the community together for more than 60 years,” Mr Colless said.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has provided more than $160,000 in funding which is testament to the support this Government has given to towns across regional NSW.”

“The theatre was built in the 1950’s to cater for the growing need for the arts in the bush and has been vital to supporting speech and drama across the Central West,” Mrs Hazelton said.

“Many productions are held here, bringing locals and tourists from outside Parkes to the area – putting heads on beds and supporting our local economy.

“Upgrades such as this are a strong reminder of all the work the NSW Liberals and Nationals are doing in the bush – and what we have achieved.”

Deputy Mayor of Parkes Shire Council Barbara Newton said that these major upgrades have been welcomed by the community and said Parkes Shire Council had provided more than $340,000 in funding towards this project.

“The theatre now includes state of the art seating affording patrons a better view of the stage, new flooring and a more modern and functional foyer area with enlarged theatre door openings to improve accessibility."

“I’d like to thank the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government for providing this additional funding and supporting regional growth in towns such as Parkes across regional NSW.”

Parkes Musical and Drama Society President, Lyn Townsend is very excited about the quality experience patrons will now have when attending a Society production.

“We’ve already held a massive Gala concert series in the last two weekends in October to open the new theatre – and I know the community can’t wait to see more productions brought to the region.”
