Opportunities for our young people
Parkes Shire Council actively facilitates and promotes opportunities, programs and events for the younger residents of Parkes Shire.
Working with schools and allied organisations, Council is able to foster the growth and development of youth activities and events, improve and develop facilities and provide an inclusive social environment for region’s youth.
Council offers employment opportunities for school leavers and students through traineeships. The future of the Parkes Shire looks positive with increases in the number of traineeships being taken up by local youth. Parkes Shire Council has more than doubled the number of traineeships offered over the past four years.
Council currently offers traineeships in engineering, information technology, finance, town planning, building surveying, tourism, horticulture, ranger services, human resources, business administration and water operations. For current opportunities visit the Careers at Council section of the website.
Parkes Shire Council delivers events during Youth Week in April each year. Past Youth Weeks events have included pop-up cinemas, drive-in movies, skate competitions, discos, talent competitions, fashion parades and modelling workshops and band performances.
Council encourages young people aged 12 to 24, who are interested in event management and/or have ideas about what events they would like to see staged during Youth Week, to contact Council's Communications Officer to see how they can get involved.
Council's network of libraries provide the youth sector of the community with a range of resources and activities to support their study, development and social involvement. Programs and initiatives include student help, quiet rooms for study, youth collections, ComicFest event, school holiday activities for the younger ones and early literacy programs. For more information on library programs and events visit the Libraries section on our website
