Parkes Sports Council

Use and improvement of our sporting facilities

The Parkes Sports Council manages the planning and use of around 26 public sporting facilities in the Parkes Shire. These facilities are used by over 6,000 sporting group members and school children.

The Sports Council is a Committee of Parkes Shire Council with a mandate to:

  1. To foster, where possible, active participation of the people of Parkes and District in all forms of athletic sport.
  2. To facilitate input to and feedback from groups towards the development and maintenance of the various sports related masterplans.
  3. To liaise with the sporting groups to address their concerns and to be a conduit to the required resources within Parkes Shire Council.
  4. To administer the Northparkes / Parkes Shire Council Sports Grants program and the Harrison Bursary Award.
  5. To administer the Annual Parkes Shire Sports Awards.
  6. To maintain the Sport Life Members Honour Roll.
  7. To monitor the sports-related projects being carried out and to provide feedback.
  8. To be the Court of Appeal over recreation areas under the Council's control in all matters whether of dispute, misconduct or otherwise.
  9. To recommend to the Parkes Shire Council Sporting Facilities Development Committee any maintenance, improvements to or development of sporting grounds under the Council's control in conjunction with any affiliated sporting body.
  10. To recommend to the Parkes Shire Council fees and charges for the use of sporting fields and sporting recreation areas.
  11. To decide applications for the use and allocation of sporting fields and sporting recreation areas.

The work of the Sports Council is well supported by local sporting groups. There is a strong volunteer base within the sporting groups that works to develop facilities. The sporting groups also contribute financially to the upgrading of the sporting facilities.

The Parkes Sports Council also coordinates annual sporting grants including the Ron Harrison Bursary and the Northparkes Mines Sporting Grants. More information about these grants can be accessed via the Grants section of our website.

The Sports Council meets monthly at the Parkes Shire Council Administration Centre.
