Filming

The Parkes Shire is an ideal filming location for films, documentaries, commercials, and television series. Our broad range of scenic rural landscapes, heritage buildings, natural wonders, country characteristics, and vibrant events make the Parkes Shire an attractive location for filmmakers.

The Parkes Shire is renowned for its portrayal in the 2000 movie 'The Dish', which featured our most iconic landmark, the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope.

Media activities such as still photography, current affairs, and news coverage do not require a permit. Parkes Shire Council must grant permission before filming is undertaken in a commercial capacity on Council-managed land.

Before commencing any filming on Council-owned property, filmmakers must consult Council's Planning and Development Department on 02 6861 2373.
