Committees and groups

Parkes Shire Council establishes committees under the Local Government Act 1993 to support good decision-making, strengthen governance, and involve the community in shaping local services and facilities.

Our committees bring together Councillors, community members, and subject matter experts, each with a clear purpose from formal decision-making and legislative compliance to providing advice and supporting the management of Council services, as outlined below.

Council reviews committee memberships each year to ensure the right mix of skills and representation, and may establish or update committees as needed under the Code of Meeting Practice.

Committees play an important role in keeping our community connected to Council, providing a practical way to contribute to local priorities and outcomes.

Committee  Purpose
Standing 

Established under Clause 20 of the Model Code of Meeting Practice, comprising the Mayor and Councillors, for a specific purpose. Such committees are comprised entirely of Councillors. 

 

Statutory         

 Established to achieve compliance with Council's legislative obligations under an Act of Parliament (e.g. Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee; Local Traffic Forum). Such committees may comprise Councillors, as well as community representatives and other stakeholders, depending on the applicable legislation.
Advisory            

Established to provide specialist advice to Council with respect to opportunities and challenges pertaining to a certain issue or oversee the implementation of a strategy or major plan of Council. Such committees may include community representation, Councillors and/or members of Council staff.
 Section 355

 

 Established under section 355 of the Act to exercise a function of the Council (e.g. management of a Council facility or service). Such committees may include community representatives, Councillors and/or members of Council staff

Council's Committees and Groups

Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee

The Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee provides independent assurance and oversight to Parkes Shire Council on how the organisation is functioning and managing risk.

Central NSW Joint Organisation

Parkes Shire Council is an active member of the Central NSW Joint Organisation, which provides strong and cohesive leadership for the communities of Central West NSW.

Country Mayors Association NSW

Parkes Shire Council is an active member of the Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA), a strong collective voice for rural and regional communities across the state.

Energy-from-Waste Community Working Party

Council adopted the Energy-from-Waste Community Working Party as a new Advisory Committee at its May Council meeting.
